More than 70 years after its composition John Cage’s magnum opus, Sonatas and Interludes, is reimagined as a three-dimensional world.
Australian percussionist, composer and sound artist Matthias Schack-Arnott is known for his unique approach to sound, creating expansive sculptural musical worlds that are beautifully lit and dramatically staged. Here he brings his distinct voice to Cage’s classic work for prepared piano and goes further to create a visual representation of his music. This commission centres on a large-scale mobile of percussion instruments that float above the piano in a constellation of rotating sound, ringing and chiming in synchronicity. Below this massive kinetic sound sculpture acclaimed French pianist Cédric Tiberghien performs the work which forever changed the sound and potential of the piano.
Sonatas and Interludes is taken to the next level in this spectacular immersive combination of concert and visual art, with Cédric’s exquisite playing at its heart.
